Another week, another design change for the SoDo sports arena that, fingers-crossed, will be home to the Seattle Sonics very soon.
Arena designers 360 Architecture presented their latest designs to the Downtown Design Review Board last week and they include an eye-grabbing new edition. No, it's not a giant Sonic fast food restaurant, it's a large wall with "SONICS" on it that would face First Avenue South at South Massachusetts Street. The wall would be part of a plaza next to the arena with elevated terraces.
On those terraces you'll find things such as a beer garden or small basketball courts. The plaza would be roughly the size of UW's Red Square. Plans also call for a Sonics team store, retail shops and restaurants along First Avenue.
The Review Board asked 360 to take another swing at the First Avenue side of the building, where they may or may not be able to widen the sidewalk to make room for these additions. The next meeting is expected to take place in 1-2 months.
