Curbed Cup First Round: (1) Ballard vs. (16) I-District

New, 9 comments

The Curbed Cup, Curbed Seattle annual Neighborhood of the Year tournament, begins today. The deserving candidates will be presented in two match-ups per day through the week, with results reviewed on Friday. Polls are open for 24 hours, starting now!

Our first face-off is between the defending Seattle neighborhood champion and and up-and-comer from South Seattle.

In this corner…Ballard. A piece of Seattle for 106 years now, to some it's the home of Seattle's gritty blue-collar shipyard folk. To others, it's the home of every condo or apartment building ever built. (And don't even get them started on the apodments…) Somewhere between the upscale buildings, trendy eateries, old school haunts and ever-changing main street, Ballard continues to redefine itself.

In the other corner…The International District. Call it Chinatown. Call it Japantown. Call it the I.D. Whatever you like, this multiethnic epicenter is making a comeback. Just like the Publix Hotel, it's getting a makeover. The Night Market's returning, they're adding parklets and they're adapting for the modern world.

It's a battle of North Seattle vs. South(ish) Seattle. Who moves on to the Elite Eight?
