Tunnel Watch

And she's off! Bertha the tunnel boring machine (and not a boring tunnel machine) has begun her big dig underneath Seattle, starting in SoDo on Tuesday afternoon. Her 1.7-mile voyage under downtown Seattle will be a slow one. For now her travels will take her six feet per day, though eventually she'll get up to 35 feet per day. She's expected to reach the old Alaskan Way Viaduct by October. [Seattle Times]
