Here's What Seattle Looked Like In 1860

Courtesy of Vintage Seattle (and Seattle Public Library), here's what has to be one of the oldest surviving photos of Seattle, taken in 1860. Pictured is the Yesler residence at Front Street and James Street. Henry Yesler came to Seattle in 1852 and lived in this house with his wife Sarah until she died in 1887. After that he moved to a mansion he had constructed between 3rd and 4th Avenues at James Street.

The view today is only slightly different (as are the street names). Not so coincidentally, this spot is now located off Yesler Way.
