Did you even know there was a certification process for faith-based buildings to become eco-friendly? GreenFaith, an interfaith coalition for the environment, hands out environmentally-friendly certifications to buildings of faith. It's not quite LEED-Gold, but it's a pretty high standard to reach for given the age of so many churches and other religious buildings.
Per CHS, Capitol Hill's Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral was certified a Green Faith Sanctuary back in June, making is the very first cathedral to earn the distinction. The process, which is as much about living green lifestyles as it is making the building itself green, is ongoing. Some of the features at the cathedral include a new bike rack and organic garden.
