Cornerspotted: 51st Ave S and S Garden Loop Rd

Yesterday, we asked you to guess the location of this 1930 proto-corner. Nobody got this admittedly-tricky one: 51st Ave S and S Garden Loop Rd.

Images: Seattle Municipal Archives, Google Maps While this stretch of 51st Avenue South in Rainier Beach spent decades as the middle of a block, it now intersects with the aptly-named S Garden Loop Road, home to Kubota Garden Estates. The development was completed in 1990 -- appropriately, just three years after Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased the nearby Kubota Garden. The Japanese garden was started by Tom Kubota in 1927, just a few years prior to the "before" photo; some of the land behind the smoke shop is likely his.
