Thousands of homes in Hawaii, California, and other warm western regions of the United States have butterfly roofs. On these rooftops, two panels meet in the middle of the roofline and slope upward and outward, like butterfly wings in mid-flap. The design is traditionally attributed to architect William Krisel, who began building butterfly roofs in southern California in 1957. But the actual designer of the butterfly roof was none other than famed French modernist Le Corbusier, who first attempted a butterfly roof in 1930. Curbed National has the full story.
