NW Modern on Mercer Island by Carl Bystrom Asks $2.25M

New, 2 comments

Carl A. Bystrom was a decorated architect with over 30 design awards, including two National AIA honors, to his name. After working for Paul Thiry as well as Decker & Christiansen, he started his own firm and built notable Pacific Northwest homes such as the 5-BR at 8101 SE 48th Street on Mercer Island that recently listed for $2.25M. Built in 1958, the Dr. Robert Zech Residence (named for the owner at the time) has midcentury-modern written all over it, though from the outside it gives off a foreboding presence. Those terraced patios & gardens out back were designed by noted landscape architect William Teufel. Inside, you get some features and fixtures you'd call "vintage" and some you'd call "dated." The built-ins, tri-level brick fireplace and sturdy staircase are among the standouts on the positive side. One thing you can't argue with is the open space, which is just waiting for the right interior decorator to make truly sing. Plenty of opportunity here, not to mention some great views, that make this an architectural artifact worth investing in.
