Sonata West Hoping For Recommendation in Columbia City

A light-rail adjacent apartment complex could finally get approval tonight

BDR Capital Partners and NK Architects will bring revised plans back before the design review board Tuesday evening with the hopes of getting a go-ahead recommendation on Sonata West at Columbia Station at 4561 MLK Jr Way South.

Plans call for 96 residential units, two live-work units and 7,226 sq. ft. of retail space. Parking for 82 vehicles will also be provided below grade. Units will be split between studio, 1-BR, and 2-BRs.

Some of the most recent changes they've made based on design board recommendations include more visible signage and canopies for the live/work units, more visible signage for retail spaces, and fin element accents on the corner tower to differentiate it from the north massing and strengthen the gateway feeling of the complex. They also made some revisions to the rooftop deck amenity space.

The original plan was to begin construction in June 2015 but delays have obviously pushed that back. Once they do start, they hope to build it to "Built Green" standards.
