Look across the water to Commencement Bay and Point Defiance Park. Then, look up to see Mt. Rainier. For a package like that it helps to be on the southern tip of Vashon Island. This $697,000 house sits there, and is only a short walk to the ferry. Pretty good package if you are commuting to Tacoma.
The house sits on 0.71 acres of 132 feet of medium bank waterfront, high enough to get more of a view, and to require lots of steps down to the beach. Down there you'll find an old boat house that is "ready for your restoration". Check those permits and plans, and your desire to deal with sawdust. Also down there are tidelands, and tideland rights. More permits to check, and a need to deal with sand at least; but fresh clams and crabs definitely have an appeal.
Up on top of the bluff sits a 3 bedroom, 1.75 bath, 1,980 square foot house that was built in 1958. The design has aged well, with only the fireplaces looking a bit period - but that's common considering the weight and mess of removing and replacing that much brick. Of course, for someone that brick is what they want. Tile floors make sense when you're that close to the beach; and they segue to softwood, bamboo, vinyl, and carpet for the kitchen and bedrooms.
Beside the house sits a swimming pool sited to frame the view and surrounded by an extensive patio. As nice as it may be to have the Sound so close, giving the kids (and the adults) warm, freshwater to swim in can be safer and cleaner. Of course, with a property like this, you could swim and fish in the Sound, climb the steps back to the patio, grill your catch and then relax in or around the pool.
A nice package that includes quick access to a major city, but be ready for a trip of at least an hour and a half if you want to get to Seattle.
