Recreational Equipment, Inc. announced back in March that they’re moving their longtime headquarters over to Bellevue’s Spring District, a burgeoning transit-oriented development. Now they’re giving us a peek at what they’re hoping their new digs will look like.
The outdoor retailer wants a campus that “brings the best of outdoor life into a collaborative work setting,” said Eric Artz, REI’s chief operating officer, in a statement. At eight acres, they have plenty of space to make it happen.
A first look at the design submitted to the City of Bellevue shows ample sun space on a wide, communal deck. Official work duties will take place outside, too, with outdoor meeting spaces, staircases, walkways for catching some vitamin D on the job.
Outdoor exercise and community event space will be available to employees.
The campus grounds will be open as a public space with easy access to nearby transit, and might include retail stores or a cafe. Three pedestrian pathways will wind throughout the campus.
The building is, of course, LEED-certified, and with a company like REI it would be weird if it wasn’t. The project emphasizes sustainability in many ways: Native flora, edible plants, “optimal solar orientation,” sunlight-filled offices, and energy efficient features.
While REI’s main headquarters is located in Kent, they currently have more than 1,400 headquarters employees in five office areas around Puget Sound.
REI announced the new location back in March. They hope to move into the new location in 2020.
