When we think of floating homes, smaller spaces can often come to mind—galley kitchens, sleeping nooks, limited closet space. That is not the case with this end-of-dock floating home in Portage Bay. Listed for $4 million, this 2,349-square-foot home has all the trappings of luxury real estate, only with a better water view.
On the main floor, an open-concept layout contains a large kitchen with a wraparound counter, a living room, and a dining area, underneath boxbeam ceilings. In a couple of space-efficient decor choices—although here the function seems to be more about not upstaging the lake—an entertainment center is built into one side of the kitchen counter, and a fireplace is embedded under a set of stairs.
That leaves that much more space for water views—like one from a bay window, designed for cozying up with a book alongside the waves.
Below, two bedrooms open directly to the home’s wraparound deck. One with a built-in bed faces a wall of multi-paned, wood-framed windows and a frosted-glass double door. The other is a corner room surrounded by mahogany-trimmed windows and a sliding glass door opening directly to the deck’s hot tub.
Of course, there’s more outdoor space up above the living area on a rooftop deck that spans the entire length and width of the home and then some. Currently, it’s set up with multiple seating areas, a fire pit, and rows of planters, looking not unlike a shared roof deck amenity in a new apartment building—only private.
Floating homes don’t come cheap, even without room to stretch out. This one is only a decade old, large, and high-end; the $3.95 million price tag is steep, but tracks. It comes with co-op dock ownership, off-street parking, and a slip for a boat.
