Lovingly renovated midcentury modern home on Mercer Island listed for $2.65 million

Despite a studs-out 2015 remodel, this home shines with midcentury style

As much as we love a midcentury modern time capsule, there’s something to be said about respectfully done modern updates. This five-bedroom luxury home in Mercer Island was first built in 1959, and it’s been renovated to keep the home current while maintaining its midcentury bones.

The house’s original vision is clear even from the exterior, with a sleek shape and a barely-pitched roof. It’s embedded in a hillside overlooking Lake Washington, and wraps around a classic courtyard on the upper level. Entries are lined by breeze blocks for a truly Palm Springs vibe.

Inside above a split entry, a great room with a kitchen, living room, and dining area is surrounded by glass on three sides—either letting the greenery of the courtyard contribute to the interior decor or bringing in light and lake views. A skylight above the staircase lets more sunshine in. Exposed beams and pillars allow for function separation while still creating a large, open space.

On one side, a wraparound deck looks out over a carefully shaped lawn and the lake. On the other, a path surrounds a tree-shaded koi pond decorated with ferns, sculptures, and stones.

The home’s master suite also includes access to the view deck in the back. The master bath’s tub faces the same direction with a window overlooking the lake—don’t worry, there’s a curtain in case there are visitors on the deck.

The home’s four other bedrooms—three downstairs, one upstairs—include built-ins, at least one other en-suite bath, and in some cases, their own views. A den and a family room add more spillover gathering or office space.

The home is listed for $2.65 million.
