While Seattle has its share of beaches for sunbathing or taking a little dip, there’s nothing like the fully-immersive experience of a small beach town. Plus, leaving the city sometimes means sandy beaches instead of mostly-rocky ones—and if you go far enough west, the vast Pacific Ocean instead of a bay, sound, or lake.
Some of these towns are a little closer than others: Some are just a ferry ride away from the city, while towns like Oysterville, Manson, and Friday Harbor may take half a day to get to. But you should be able to find something here, whether you’re looking to spend a day or a weekend basking in the sun, shopping for nautical souvenirs, walking down a boardwalk with an ice cream cone, or hydrating at a local tavern.
Does small town matter more than beach town? Here are some incredible small towns to visit near Seattle. (Some of them still have beaches.)
