The Washington Waterfront Home Tour: 10 homes worth seeing

10 of our favorites from more than 100 waterfront properties

View as Map

It’s the season for dreaming of a home on the water, with the summer now fully upon us. It’s also the season for touring some homes on the water, with Windermere’s annual waterfront home tour this weekend, June 24 and 25.

The homes are located throughout Western Washington, from the San Juans to Fox Island—so while you could try visiting them all in two days, it might be hard without a teleporter. But for planning purposes, most of the homes that are having open houses are doing so from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, or both. Some are still by appointment though—especially those extra-luxurious or harder-to-reach getaways.

Our picks range from the tour’s cheapest, $299,000 for a tiny cabin on Cypress Island, to $4.8 million for a 1922 home on 225 feet of Bainbridge Island waterfront. They also range from right in the city to, again, a tiny, remote cabin on Cypress Island.

(The most expensive home on the tour go up to a whopping 20 million for a nearly hundred-acre estate with a runway in the San Juans—formerly owned by an Amazon executive.)

Don’t like our picks? There are plenty more homes where these came from.

This appropriately-beachy, four-bedroom, shingled home from 1922 has been pristinely maintained, with bold cased openings, polished wood wainscoting, and elaborate, exposed beams. It sits on more than a third of an acre, including 225 feet of low-bank waterfront with a deepwater dock. It’s listed for $4.8 million.

This Bainbridge Island northwest contemporary places emphasis on the cabin-inspired elements of the style, with wide swaths of exposed wood grain and brick throughout. Here’s something that most cabins don’t have, though: an indoor pool, with the same peaked, exposed-beam ceilings that look so gorgeous in the main house.

This Bainbridge Island home was built in 2006, and while it has many modern touches, much of the home’s design nods to earlier craftsmans and Cape Cods, too. It all meshes well together in a house that’s full of built-ins, bright paned windows, and water views. (It has a great little library, too.)

It’s listed for $2.7 million; viewings are by appointment only.

This early-‘70s northwest contemporary in Kingston is full of dynamic, open spaces topped by vaulted ceilings and skylights. Bonus: It has a few stained glass windows thrown in.

It’s open both Friday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

We’re more than a little intrigued by this listing, which, visually, is a little mysterious. But here’s what we know: It’s a 221-square-foot log cabin with a 91-square-foot porch on more than five acres of waterfront property on Cypress Island. For the right off-the-grid type, that alone means it’s worth checking out. It should go without saying that this one is by appointment only.

Note: Map location is only for Cypress Island, not for the cabin itself.
